Classic or Premier Yoga Mat?

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CLASSIC & PREMIER YOGA MATS

We get asked all the time - what is the difference between the Classic and Premier Yoga Mats. So we have tried to explain below and added in some sample images.

The Classic Mat is one of the oldest Yoga Mats that was made available in the UK when Ruth White started selling them in the early 1980's and was originally called 'The Ruth White Standard Yoga Mat'. We only started selling The Premier Mat (and Ampio Mat) about 10 years ago, so it is a much newer product. We do know that some of our oldest Yoga Teachers have had their Classic / Standard Mats for years and years. When they came to replace it, the size had changed. The original width of the Classic Mat was 66cm, which hasn't been sold for over 16 years now. It is now the uniform 60cm in width. Whereas we haven't been selling the Premier (and Ampio) Mat for that long, so haven't had the same reports back yet - so we can't yet say which Yoga Mat will actually last the longest, but we do know that both are very durable.

Both of these Yoga Mats are made in Germany, but only the Premier Mats have got the Oeko-Tex standard attached to them. They can both be machine washed at a low temperature. The main difference between the Classic and Premier Mats is the Material. You can use both sides of the Classic Mat as it has a mesh running through the middle of the Mat, making both sides usable, whereas the Premier Mats have a smooth side which goes floor side down and you generally do yoga on the textured / bumpy side. As far as the texture of the material goes, we would say that the Classic Mat is slightly more textured. So when describing the material, we would say it has a more bumpy, irregular feel to the texture whereas the Premier Mat has a more uniform, textured feel.

Both Mats are cut from 30m rolls. These rolls both have a coating applied to them to allow the rolls to unroll evenly. This coating just wears off in time with plenty of Yoga practice on the Mat! You can speed the process up by either washing the Mat or but lots jumping and moving about on the Mat.
